SIUE says farwell to Patrick Riddleberger

Just prior to Thanksgiving break, on November 18th,SIUE faculty gathered to give thanks for and remember Patrick Williams Riddleberger.  Held in the University Center for Spirituality and Sustainability the memorial featured fond stories and speeches from Riddleberger’s co-workers, family, and friends.

Riddleberger taught at SIUE from 1960 until 1985 and remained a prominent figure on campus long into his retirement.  Over his career Riddleberger was honored with many awards for excellence in teaching including the SIUE Alumni Association’s Great Teacher Award, the SIUE Outstanding Scholar Award, a Fullbright Award, and an honorary doctorate of humane letters.

Born October 6, 1915 in Woodstock, VA, Riddleberger is regarded by those who knew him as the quintessential southern gentleman and a life long scholar right up until his death June 4, 2011.  A professor of history, his specialty was the American Civil War reconstruction, research he continued well into his retirement.
