I hope the start of the academic year is going well for everyone.  For me, personally, it has been a much smoother start, without looming budget realignment talk. While no one can predict what will happen in Springfield later in the year, at least for the moment, we are in a period of relative normalcy, and that’s a good thing.

Speaking of last year and budgets, an important part of this issue of TMIC is my responses and decisions based on the outstanding work of the ad hoc Strategic Budget Committee, along with the full reports generated by the Committee.  Some of these decisions have already been implemented while others are deferred until additional analysis can be done.  Due to the sensitive nature of some of the information contained in these reports, you will need your e-id to access them, but all of this information can be found here.

I’m sure that reading these reports will produce many questions.  As mentioned at the Fall meeting, I’ll be starting a Q & A section for TMIC, so please send any questions you might have to college_arts_sciences@siue.edu.  These questions don’t have to be about the budget!  Ask me anything, and I’ll do my best to answer them next month.

Finally, at the Fall meeting I discussed how the ideas of Truth and Beauty, at least for me, are deeply interwoven and create a tapestry that helps me understand the relationships between the diverse programs within CAS.  In closing, I’d like to share a few links to some of the videos that I wanted to show at the Fall meeting, but couldn’t due to time constraints. Here are the links to the videos for the kinetic sculpture, cell division, and pendulum waves.  Hope you enjoy them as much as I do!

Until next month…..
