A Message from The Dean
Welcome to the March edition of This Month in CAS!
Two of our faculty take center stage this month. Each year the College of Arts and Sciences awards the William and Margaret Going Endowed Professorship. Read all about this year’s recipient, Dr. Jessica DeSpain from the Department of English Language and Literature. Her scholarship and teaching connect the digital humanities with meaningful community engagement in innovative ways. In addition, Dr. Jeffrey Manuel, from the Department of Historical Studies, has been named a 2018 Collaborative Research Fellow by the American Council of Learned Societies. Jeff and his collaborator will use the resources to investigate recent progress in the U. S. and Brazilian biofuels programs.
Our alumnus Matthew Bradford of the Illinois State Police District 11 has been awarded the Medal of Valor. Matthew Bradford is a 2013 graduate of the SIUE Criminal Justice program, who joined the Illinois State Police upon graduation. TMIC details his courage in the encounter with a dangerous criminal that led to his award.
The University Museum recently received an outstanding donation from the estate of inventor/artist/Buckminster Fuller. Thirteen original prints from Fuller work will provide our students and faculty additional opportunities to engage with Fuller’s visionary idea’s.
This week (March 26-30) the Mass Communications Department will feature its annual “Mass Comm. Week” This year’s theme is “Swiping Right on Media Convergence”, and will focus on Specialism in Media Convergence and the digital evolution of media.
Finally, I’d like to thank everyone who responded to the Strategic Plan survey. Our committee is working to put a draft together that I will bring back to the College next Fall. Your help and input is most appreciated!
Still looking forward to spring! At this point, I’m worried that we’ll go straight to summer!
Best wishes,
Greg Budzban
