SIUE Faculty Member Donates $100,000 To Biology Department
On December 11, 2012 SIUE Faculty gathered to receive a generous donation from long time SIUE biology professor Ralph Axtell. The one hundred thousand dollar donation will be used to set up an endowment fund for the Department of Biological Sciences and help support research efforts in the Ecology and Organismal Biology Teaching Laboratory.
Axtell holds the current SIUE record for longest continuous service having worked for SIU since 1960 at the Shurtleff campus in Alton. During his long career with SIUE Axtell has accomplished a great deal including his service as biology department chair from 1965 to 1968, his service to the American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologist as well as the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and over 100 publications.
The completion of the new SIUE science building holds a particularly important significance to Axtell as it is the realization of a long time effort. Axtell was involved in the design process for the current science building as well as for three different additions to the building, the first two having never been built and the third being the addition to be completed this spring.
