October’s novel for Year of the Book: Satrapi’s Persepolis

Persepolis is an autobiographical graphic novel that details Satrapi’s childhood and early adulthood in Iran during and after the Islamic Revolution. In the novel, main character “Marji” lives her childhood in Iran during the tumultuous political and social changes and her teenage years in Austria, where she attends school and experiences a very different social atmosphere.
SIUE students, faculty, staff, and area residents may purchase the novel at the University Bookstore and receive a 20 percent discount during the month of October. The book is also held at the Lovejoy Library and the Edwardsville Public Library.
On Tuesday, October 2, the English Language and Literature and the Women’s Studies departments will be co-sponsoring a brown bag entitled “Women in Islam in the context of Marjane Satrapi’s Persepolis.” The event will be held in the Women’s Studies Office in Peck Hall, room 3407, from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.
English professor Geoff Schmidt will additionally be hosting a discussion on Persepolis on Tuesday, October 23, from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. at the Friends Reading Corner in the Lovejoy Library.
