SIUE Fulbright Winner Packs for Czech Republic
Julie Pietroburgo of the SIUE department of Public Administration and Policy Analysis prepares for her semester long stay in the Czech Republic. This trip is funded by a Fulbright award earned by Pietroburgo last April.
During her semester away Pietroburgo will be teaching a small handful of the over forty thousand students at Masaryk University in Brno. Her temporary position will be in the department of public economics teaching a course on capacity building for non-profits and giving a number of guest lectures in organization theory, public budgeting, and marketing for non-profit organizations.
“I wanted to go to a country where the non-profit sector was in it’s infancy,” explained Pietroburgo, “In the Czech republic we’re only talking about NGO development since the early nineteen nineties.”
Along with her teaching duties Pietroburgo will be working on a sabbatical project studying partnerships with international NGO’s.
“I’ve worked a lot domestically on multi-party partnerships. What I’m really doing here is extending that research to see how it works on an international basis.”
After a successful career in private industry Pietroburgo turned to academia to pursue non-profit work which she found more appealing. Currently she is involved with numerous non-profit groups in the region including: Family Hospice, Girl Scouts, and Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Southwestern Illinois. She hopes that she can take the unique applied focus strategies of SIUE’s department and put them to work within the program at Masaryk.
Pietroburgo will be leaving for the Czeck Republic on September fourteenth and returning December seventh.
