Goshen Flash Mob
Last Wednesday at noon two hundred plus students broke out in synchronized dance in SIUE’s Goshen lounge. The group was a flash mob organized by dance professor Kristen Best-Kinscherff and students from SIUE’s theater and dance program.
The initial decision to create an on campus flash mob for SIUE’s students to strut their stuff was made back in September. Best and a group of four dance majors selected the music and came up with the choreography.
“I wanted something easy enough anyone would be able to learn it but also hard enough that people would find it a challenge.” Best explained.
The small group of students then taught the dance to a number of the dance and theater classes in the department as well as to several fraternities. To aid in their recruitment they utilized social media, Youtube in particular, to make training videos for the dance available to potential participants. These tools combined with the encouragement to all participants to recruit others turned a handful into hundreds.
“I think it’s really neat that so many people got involved,” Best commented, “It was really neat to provide that sense of community.”
