Accolades for Marc Shapman
Marc Shapman, the SIUE Music Department, recently received the William and Margaret Going Endowed Professorship Award. This award is open to all full time CAS faculty and is meant to acknowledge outstanding, teaching, scholarly, and creative accomplishment. Applications for the award are taken every other year, with submissions being reviewed by the dean and associate dean of the college of arts and sciences.
As part of the award Shapman will receive a five thousand dollar stipends to aid in his research. He intends to use the money to expand the reach of his creative activities, investing in new publicity materials as well as providing budget for travel. One of Shapman’s goals is to attract a manager which will help to assure priority auditions in a greater variety of venues.
“I do a lot of performing already but I want to do more in bigger venues,” Shampan shared.
Shapman feels that remaining active in the musical community helps to keep him energized when working with students, while providing learning experiences he can bring back for his students.
“It’s an ever changing ever evolving field.”
Shapman’s next big project is his role as musical director for SIUE’s production of “Fame,” a joint production between the department of music and the department of theater and dance. Other upcoming projects include a Broadway review of “Side by Side by Sondheim” this November, performances with “Opera on the James” next January, and a production of “Too many Sopranos” next march.
Additionally Shapman is heavily involved with the National Association for the Teachers of Singing (NATS) particularly within the tri-state region. Last summer he was awarded the Emerging leaders award by the organization, an award given based on the success of his students in NATS competitions as well as for his exceptional service to the organization.
