Amahl and the Night Visitors

A scene form Amahl and the Night Visitors The SIUE music department performed “Amahl and the Night Visitors” December 10th and 11th at St. Boniface Catholic Church.

Origionally created for NBC in 1951, the opera tells the story of a young, crippled boy and his mother shortly before the birth of Christ. They receive a surprise when three kings show up on their doorstep looking for a place to rest. During the king’s short visit, Amahl and his mother learn about the king’s mission to find the Christ child, with Amahl choosing to join them on their journey.

The production was organized by Marc Schapman, a SIUE professor and attendee of St. Boniface.

“I wanted to give something back to my parish,” Schapman said.
