A New Face at Art Jewelry Magazine

Annie Pennington, Associate editor of Art Jewelery Magazine

Annie Pennington

Annie Pennington MFA, has been hired as the new Associate editor for Art Jewelry Magazine. Annie obtained her BFA in jewelry design from Pittsburg State University, and her MFA in metalsmithing from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.

Published by Kalmbach Publishing out of Waukesha Wisconsin, Art Jewelry Magazine is an instructional, “how to” Magazine for people looking to start making jewelry or learn alternative methods. The magazine features tutorials, a gallery of featured work, and reviews on the latest tools and products for jewelry creation.

“It’s pretty amazing to do a job that you love,” Annie explained, “I get to do something different every day.”

Annie works on the magazine with a staff of three others in a building that houses sixteen of Kalmbach’s seventeen special interest magazines. Annie loves the positive work environment that emphasizes respect for all clients and workers. The office also features a studio where the writers and editors can test out new jewelry making tools and techniques.

“It came about by being in the right place at the right time and not being afraid to talk to somebody,” Annie commented on how she got the job through networking at an art show she attended.

Pennington’s educational background lends her a unique skill set that she hopes to read with the magazine’s readers. During her time at Pittsburg state Annie had access to fewer professional grade materials or equipment and had to frequently rely on hardware stores for non-traditional materials. During her time at SIUE she was able to work with a wider variety of professional grade equipment and techniques. The emphasis in her work now is on application of traditional techniques to non-traditional materials, bringing out the beauty in objects that might otherwise be overlooked.

As the associate editor Annie’s job is to check techniques featured in the articles for accuracy as well as to work with the featured artist to resolve grammatical and format problems. The main emphasis of her job is to make sure that articles featured match the style of the magazine and live up to a certain quality standard. Aside from the challenge of editing Annie’s job entails writing three featured articles a year. She hopes to bring her love for teaching and for working with unusual objects to her new position.
