Students win big at art competition
The closing reception of the fourth installment of the Students Art Competition Exhibition was held on Thursday, March 31 in the Morris University Center Art Gallery. At the reception, 10 students were each awarded $1000 for their art work which was displayed during the competitive show.
Altogether, about 62 pieces of student art were on display at this year’s show. Nine pieces from that display were selected by this year’s juror Tim Waldrop, alumnus of SIUE’s art department and associate professor of art at Western Illinois University. A tenth piece was selected by students. All 10 pieces were then purchased by SIUE at $1000 each. These pieces along with the 30 pieces from the past three years will be on display permanently in the Student Success Center.
On hand, at the reception, to announce this year’s winners was John Denhouter, department chair and associate professor of art and design.
“This has been a very popular and competitive show with some of our strongest students entering their best work,” said Denhouter.
This year’s winners were:
- Will Rimel
- Tara Morton
- Michael Wartgow
- Scott Ross
- Brett Fruend
- Daniel Stumeier
- Dan Van Tassell
- Melanie Smith
- Nick Martin
- Aurora Bihler
The Student Art Competition Exhibition began in 2007 to mark the university’s 50th anniversery. By the end of five years, SIUE would have purchased 50 pieces of student art work — commemorating its 50-year history. Next year’s show will be the final installment.
