Step Up PR presents “An Evening with Speech Communication”

The Department of Speech Communication is hosting its 3rd annual “An Evening with Speech Communication” on April 13 at 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Goshen Lounge.

The theme of this year’s event, which is being planned by a group of senior speech communication students in the public relations track who form the team Step Up PR, is “Connect the Dots.” There are three main goals for the evening according to lead student organizer and account manager Lindan Noel.

“[the goals are] to raise awareness of the department to the SIUE community… to educate students about what the department really entails … [and] we want to give our students and the SIUE community a chance to interact with speech communication alumni,” said Noel.

Students will have an opportunity to learn about the three different tracks – public relations, corporate and organizational, and interpersonal – available in the Department of Speech Communication. There will be one booth for each speech communication track and other booths designed to showcase faculty research, speech communication student organizations and general department information. The evening will also feature interactive games and trivia.

“This event is important because there are other communications programs on campus and we would like to clarify ourselves to the SIUE community,” explained Noel. “Also, many people assume that speech communication solely entails public speaking. This event will give a better understanding of what majors in speech communication really do.”

Step Up PR consists of four senior speech communication students – Noel, Sarah Manfucci, Stevie Pettit and Jennifer Krizmanich. The team, as a part of their public relations senior project, organize the event for their client – the Department of Speech Communications. Organizing the event serves as practical training for the future public relations professionals.

“We have worked closely with our two professors – Dr. Sorin Nastasia and Dr. Laura Perkins. We have also worked closely with the department chair – Dr. Isaac Blankson. We have been given assistance by all of the faculty in the department in some way,” Noel said.

This will be the second year that the annual event is being hosted by a group of students on the public relations track.
