Annual Mass Comm. Week set for March 26th- 30th

The Mass Communications Department will feature its annual “Mass Comm.”  For the last week of March. This year’s theme is “Swiping Right on Media Convergence”; and will focus on Specialism in Media Convergence and the digital evolution of media.

The 2018 event it to be co-headlined by iProspect VP and Head of Social Media; Brittany Richter and Cox Analytics Director; Brooke Huntley.

Richter will start the week with back to back sessions on; “The Role of Specialism in a Convergent Media” and “Digital Media Planning 101”. Richter currently Brittany oversees the vision and strategic activation of paid and organic social media across iProspect’s U.S. offices. Today this team of 120+ social experts service more than 30 accounts, totaling 175+ brands. A passionate digital native, Brittany began her journey as a food blogger, immersing herself in social media and SEO, and then parlayed that experience into a career as an account manager on integrated accounts covering social media, SEO, and paid search.

On Tuesday, March 27th, Huntley will also offer two sessions for visitors; “How to Get Employers to Swipe right on Your Digital Marketing Potential” and “The Essentials of Digital Analytics”. Based out of Cox Media Group in Atlanta, New York City, she went back to help re-launch Triscuit and Ritz Brands in 2015 with emphasis on innovation in content and e-commerce. She joined Cox Media Group in late 2015 to lead digital strategy for their high value advertising clients. With analytics and ROI at the forefront of the industry, she built the first in-house advertising analytics team, known as Cox Analytics. Now servicing over 50+ clients across 10 industry verticals.

Wednesday brings H&L Partners Digital Director; Chris Kilcullen to Dunham Hall to introduce, “The Media Universe Converges on You. This Time, It’s Personal.”

Another key speaker will be a filmmaker and producer from Columbia, Missouri; Daphne Valerius. Valerius will showcase her documentary “The Souls of Black Girls”, followed by a Q&A discussion after. Amid other achievements, the success of, “The Souls of Black Girls”, has garnered Ms. Valerius the support of the late Dr. Dorothy Height, a well- known women’s rights activist and American educator, helping her win the Mira Nair Award for Rising Female Filmmakers. This Harlem Int’l Film Festival, winner gained the privilege of being named amongst, “The Best Black Documentary Directors of 2008”. Remarkably, Ms. Valerius was featured as a panelist of Procter & Gamble’s 2009 national, “My Black is Beautiful” tour where the same, “The Souls of Black Girls” documentary was used as a centerpiece for discussion. At the height of the film’s unexpected success, Ms. Valerius was an invited guest of First Lady Michelle Obama to the White House as a result of her work.

The week-long series of events start today and ends Friday in Dunham Hall. Topics will include how to build a career after graduation in mass communication and tips on what to know before graduating. In addition, a First Amendment Free Food Festival will take place on Wednesday during lunchtime in the patio area outside Dunham Hall.

The week will conclude on Friday, March 30th, with the annual “SIUE Mass Communications Alumni Night”, where the program alumni gather for a night of celebration and recognizing current students on their 2018 Honors Day awards.
