“Whenever I was little I got it in my head I was going to be on the show. I kept telling myself one day I would be, and I never really thought it would actually happen,” said Legate, who is currently a second year student at the SIU School of Dental Medicine. “I always [thought] it’s just one of those far-fetched dreams you always have.”

But Legate found herself on the show after going to the Wheelmobile event last year at Lumiere Place Hotel & Casino in St. Louis. Once receiving a callback from that venture, she went to a second audition in October, after which she received a letter informing her that she was selected as a contestant.

Legate said she was not sure what to expect going into the taping, but she knew it would be exciting and different.

“I guess I expected to be nervous because they kept warning us constantly it’s not like sitting at home…,” Legate said. “It was just so exciting. It was really fun. I met a lot of really nice people that day.”

Contestants spent roughly 12 hours together, according to Legate, because six days worth of the show were being taped the day she was on set in California.

The difference Legate noticed from what she anticipated was that the taping “was an extremely long process” – except for when she was on the stage.

“It seriously was the fastest 20 minutes of your life,” Legate said. “You get up there [with] all these cameras and bright lights in your face. [That] makes it go by so quickly.”

Though Legate said she is not able to reveal how she fared, during the taping, she said the hair and makeup crew were “swarming you and touching you up.”

“You just blink and it’s over,” Legate said.

The taping occurred Nov. 8. More information about the Wheelmobile’s next event can be found at the Wheel of Fortune website
