January’s novel for Year of the Book: A Visit from the Goon Squad

Written by Jennifer Egan in 2010, “A Visit from the Goon Squad,” is a collection of short interconnected stories centered around a group of aging rock music executives that stylistically bridges the gap between a collection of shorts and a conventional novel. The work focuses on themes such as the prices of success, the unpredictability of life, and the inevitabilities of age.

As part of the year of the book initiative headed up by the Department of English Language and Literature, “A Visit from the Goon Squad,” will be read and discussed by a number of academic groups on campus during the month of January. Additionally it is available at a 20% discount from the university bookstore this month.
