The Women’s Studies department at SIUE offers graduate and undergraduate women the opportunity to share their insights, speak their minds, and contemplate the historical and contemporary situations of women in society through both academic and extracurricular endeavors.

Besides Coffee With Cool Women, various panel discussions, and informative lectures, the department is reaching out to the women of SIUE through its website: http://siuewmst.wordpress.com/.

The site offers browsers the opportunity to read about the program’s planned events, course offerings in women’s studies, faculty information, interesting links, conferences, and news regarding women’s studies programs, among other topics.

Among the wealth of information regarding women’s studies and SIUE’s program, the site is also home to the WMST Blog: http://siuewmst.wordpress.com/wmst-blog/.

The WMST Blog features posts from both SIUE women faculty and students. Each post presents timely women’s issues and thoughtful reflections. The latest post from September 19th is written by Political Science professor Dr. Anne Flaherty.

The post is about the recent news of the woman professor at American University in Washington, D.C., who, because she had no childcare lined up for the day, brought her infant with her to teach classes and ended up breastfeeding the child in class. Dr. Flaherty offers the facts of the situation along with her commentary and poses important questions to readers.

The news has stirred up much controversy, and the WMST Blog offers SIUE faculty and students to have a voice about the issue.

Any person may visit the blog, read, and join in on the discussions frequently occurring between SIUE faculty and students. The blog, and the website as a whole, allows those interested in women’s issues to be informed and inspired and to become a part of a growing interactive community.
