Coffee with Véronique LaCapra

Last Wednesday Véronique LaCapra from St. Louis Public Radio sat down to coffee with a group of SIUE students. The meeting was part of the women’s studies program’s “Coffee With Cool Women” series, the goal of which is to allow students to converse with professionals in a casual environment.

Students had the opportunity to talk to LaCapra about the various twist and turns of her career. LaCapra didn’t begin with media in mind but rather started out with a PhD in ecosystem ecology. After getting burned out on academics she took a job working with the EPA regulating pesticides. She eventually began taking radio production courses on the side and after freelancing landed a position as a science reporter for NPR.

“It’s never too late to try something different,” LaCapra proclaims.

LaCapra also offered insights into her current position with NPR on everything from eating bugs to editing sound bites.

“It’s very varied and it’s never boring,” LaCapra commented on why she loves her job.
