Music from the Middle East: A workshop and performance in cultural diplomacy and community engagement.

Morris University Center (MUC)

Hickory, Hackberry Room

6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

Please join us for an evening of music and a discussion of cultural diplomacy.

Pianist and cultural diplomat John Ferguson has performed and engaged culturally in over 110 nations since his founding of American Voices over 20 years ago. From the traditional venues of European festivals in London, Paris and Berlin to nations emerging from isolation or conflict such as Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan or Sudan, American Voices’ concerts, festivals and youth academies have reached millions through live performance, television and social media.

John will be joined by Marc Thayer (formerly with the St. Louis Symphony), Director of Education, and young music students from Iraq and Lebanon for this discussion of music and culture in the Middle East.  Violinists Rebin Ali, Alan Salih Mohammad, Aram Kawa and Tony Moussa will perform traditional Kurdish, Arabic and Turkish music with voice, piano, oud and percussion.

Free and open to the public; refreshments will be served.

This program is organized SIUE’s Middle East and Islamic Studies Initiative with generous support from the SIUE’s College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Historical Studies, and Department of Music. Visitor parking ($1.00/hr.) is at Lot B. Visit www.siue.edu/maps/ for directions.
