PRSSA lends a hand to the National Children’s Cancer Society

SIUE’s chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) presented a check for $350 to the National Children’s Cancer Society (NCCS) on December 6.

(L-R) Stacy Howard, instructor of speech communication; Marli Knipping; Jenny Stephens, NCCS representative; Kelly Mitchell; Alyssa Eason, president of PRSSA; Sarah Manfucci; Amy Curry; Lindy Noel; and Isaac Blankson, department chair and associate professor of speech communication attend the presentation of a check from the PRSSA to NCCS.

PRSSA held a fundraising event in early November in response to a request, by the NCCS, for the organization’s help.

Alyssa Eason, SIUE senior and PRSSA president, said PRSSA was enthusiastic about raising funds for such an important cause.

“The National Children’s Cancer Society approached PRSSA about doing a fundraiser for them and we proudly accepted,” said Eason. “We ended up doing an all you can eat and drink event at Big Daddy’s. It was $20 a ticket and $5 per ticket went towards the National Children’s Cancer Society.”

Eason said that PRSSA’s goal was to raise $700 for the organization.

“We ended up having over 70 people show up and we made $350 [for NCCS],” Eason said. We had a goal of $700. So, we made half our goal and we were ecstatic about it.”

Stacey Howard, instructor of speech communication, was also excited about the results of the PRSSA’s effort.

“[The] PRSSA is a professional organization for public relations so this was a great opportunity because they get actual real world experience doing event planning, writing news releases for a fundraiser and helping a non-profit,” said Howard. “It’s a win-win because non=profits are always looking for help because they need funds and the volunteerism. For the students, it’s a win because they get real world experience.”
