International faculty at SIUE

Broad range exposure to the world is the wish of every institution of higher education. When one looks around the College of Arts and Sciences at SIUE, one may not see how diverse the faculty is. The office of the dean of the College hopes to change this.

The dean’s office hosted an event for international faculty at SIUE. Wendy Shaw, professor and associate dean, said the College has an interest in expanding the international range of faculty, staff and students.

Musonda Kapatamoyo, assistant professor of mass communications, is one of the international professors who attended the event.

“What (CAS) Dean Romero is doing is strengthening the ties of the international faculty—to strengthen their ties to each other and to the University, as well as that of the surrounding Edwardsville area” Kapatamoyo stated. “Newly arrived foreign faculty often struggle with things like getting a doctor and a dentist, finding a school for their children—and the more experienced international faculty help with that.”

“We want to bring the world to our students and bring our students to the world,” Shaw said. “We want to celebrate the element of diversity in the College.”

“Dean Romero is also encouraging us to attract students from our home country to SIUE, to strengthen our ties with the many nations represented by international faculty,” Kapatamoyo added.

The event had a good turnout. About 35 international faculty members attended the event. There are 31 countries represented in the College. There are almost 60 members of the international faculty at SIUE.

“And finally, Dean Romero is helping us publish our works here and abroad,” Kapatamoyo said.
