Disabilities Awareness Month—an Adventure!

“Every college, including the College of Arts and Sciences, has students with disabilities,” said Director of Disability Services Phillip Pownall. “It’s a diversity issue that CAS is addressing through their diversity initiative.”

As part of Disabilities Awareness Month, students across the campus are encouraged to participate in experiential activities that are developed to broaden their understanding of the effort it takes to be a student with a disability.

“Today there are three experiential centers covering audio hallucinations, learning disabilities, and deaf and hard of hearing communication deficit,” Pownall said. “The deficit for students with hearing impairment is a communication deficit. Hearing is just a secondary or tertiary issue for them. We’re asking students to go to a place they may not know and ask for something without any oral or auditory communication.”

Students who participate in at least six events by the end of the month are eligible to win an iPad. A list of activities and a log to document participation can be found in the Disability Support Services office in the Student Success Center, room 1270.
