Faculty Art: More Than Pretty Pictures

"September Sunday" by John DenHouter

“It’s important that art and design students see that we are practicing artists who are active in the field,” said Associate Professor John DenHouter, chair of the Department of Art and Design. ”

The SIUE Annual Faculty Exhibition was in the Morris University Center Gallery the last three weeks of September.

“When students see work by an educator they can more readily access that faculty member,” said Art and Design Professor Jane Barrow. “The exhibit puts something out there that helps students understand the context of the instructor’s conversations in the classroom.”

Barrow added that experiencing the exhibit herself every year helps her better know her colleagues.

“I saw Barbara Nwacha’s work change from the last bit of work I’d seen. And I had a good conversation around Steve Brown’s photographs of suburban Ireland. I’m getting to know him better,” she said.

The Faculty Exhibition has been replaced by Prijedor: Lives from the Bosnian Genocide. The Bosnian Exhibition runs through Nov. 3 with a reception Tuesday, Oct. 12, in the MUC Gallery, starting at 5 p.m. A presentation in the Mississippi-Illinois Room follows at 6 p.m.
